HUMANS Humans aren’t that interesting, in the big scheme of things. They have a lifespan of about eighty years and an alarmingly high sex drive, causing them to breed exponentially. The only instinct that surpasses their sex drive in strength is their determination to survive. Although mortal, humans stop at nothing to escape with their lives. Some are born with natural magical powers and some study and develop them over time. About twenty percent of humans practice magic. They are usually very motivated by power, money and fame.
VAMPIRES Also called “the living dead”, vampires are widely feared creatures that must feed on the blood of the living (or recently deceased) to survive. Vampires are “born” by biting into the flesh of their victim and injecting poison into their bloodstream. If all of the victim’s blood is sucked out, then the victim will die, but if enough blood remains in the victim’s body, then he or she will undergo the painful process of becoming a vampire, which can last from several hours to several weeks. Sometimes, victims are presumed dead and buried before they rise from the grave as vampires. Vampires have very little blood in their systems, causing them to have deathly-pale complexions. They have fangs for teeth. Under no circumstances will they sparkle in the sunlight. As they are no longer living, vampires have the capability to live forever, unless a wooden state is slammed through their heart. They have a strong allergic reaction to garlic and direct sunlight burns them and if they have prolonged exposure to it, it will burn them into dust.
WEREWOLVES They are either born into an existing back or in the same method as vampires—from a werewolf biting the victim and injecting their venom straight into the victim’s veins. The process of becoming a werewolf is a lot less painful and time-consuming than the process of becoming a vampire. Werewolves have two forms: that of a mortal and that of a giant wolf. All werewolves transform on the night of the full moon each month, but werewolves who are born as such, can transform at will and maintain self-awareness. Individuals who are bitten are forced into painful transformation on the night of every full moon, but they will lose all sense of self and run wild and bloodthirsty, and unless restrained, they have been known to murder even their own kin. Werewolves may be wounded with any type of weapon, but they will only die when silver gets in their bloodstream. There is no certain way to tell a werewolf in human-like form apart from anyone else, but they do possess unnaturally pointed canine teeth and a lot of body hair. They are known to possess other wolf-like qualities even in human form. The average lifespan of a werewolf is eighty years.
CENTAURS Centaurs have the body of a horse and the torso of a man or woman. They are known to be imposing warriors and able scientists, but their minds are so easily addled by alcohol or attractive members of the opposite sex. Legend has it that centaurs come from another planet and fell from the heavens to Speirling, but have long since forgotten their alien origins. Whatever the story, centaurs rely heavily on the sciences of Astronomy and Astrology for advice, knowledge and tomorrow’s weather. The average lifespan of a centaur is two hundred and fifty years.
UNICORNS Unicorns are creatures of great magic. They possess the body of a white horse, a single gold or silver horn twisting from their forehead, and the beard and cloven hooves of a goat. They appear to float as they tread upon the ground and sometimes they have a soft glow about them. They have powerful magic and they tend to trust young, virginal girls of beauty. A unicorn can be made into a slave if a golden bridle is fastened around their head. They are immortal.
SATYRS They have the torso of a man or woman, the hips-down and horns of a goat. They are light-hearted creatures and are often to be found playing a merry tune on their reed-pipes. They know how to strangely charming and seductive and often play with rudimentary nature magic. They are known to occasionally carry off pretty girls, but they are not malicious beings. They have a lifespan of approximately ninety years.
SIDHE Pronounced “shee”, the sidhe are considered supreme among the fae. They are tall, beautiful and possess pointed ears and great magical powers. They are fluent in the common tongue, but they speak the Ancient Language. It is very difficult to wound or kill a member of the sidhe and unless they are killed, they are immortal.
DWARVES Short and stout and blessed with plenty of hair, dwarves are expeditious miners and the finest craftsmen in all of Speirling. They most commonly live in caves or underground. They have an average lifespan of three hundred years.
SPRITES Sprites are small creatures that look much like miniature sidhe that flit around on their beautiful wings. Like the sidhe, they have the capacity for powerful magic and are often born with magical powers. Sprites are often nature guardians or watch over children animals. Their average lifespan is one hundred years.
KELPIES Kelpies feed on human flesh by transforming into horses and leading unsuspecting people into the water. They then drown their victim and feed deep below the surface. It is impossible to distinguish a kelpie in their human form from anyone else. They have an average lifespan of two hundred years.
GOBLINS Goblins are small mischievous creatures who are often motivated by gold or shiny objects. They are known for playing pranks on their taller neighbors or finding employ in the hands of wicked fae in stealing children. Their average lifespan is four hundred years.
NYMPHS Nymphs are men and women who appear young and incredibly physically attractive. They are gentle creatures and spend most of their time looking after trees, animals or lost children. They are especially adept at nature magic and they are much sought-after by satyrs. They are immortal.
BANSHEES Banshees are tall, winged fae with hollow bones and slight builds that give them the ability to fly. They are closely related to the sidhe, but have a darker calling. Banshees can predict death, converse with ghosts and sometimes even travel beyond the grave and back again. They are empathetic creatures and often mourn the dead by wailing or keening. The wail of a banshee is said to send a bone-chilling silver through mortals and even the brightest sidhe. They are often wield magic with a powerful hand. They are immortal.
CHANGELINGS Changelings are much like sidhe in appearance, only shorter and without the sidhe’s magic glow and grace. Changelings are master shape-shifters and can take any form they choose, even those of inanimate objects. They are best known for sneaking into human homes, taking the form of their children and then whisking the real offspring off to Teunmach. They may stay in the mortal home for awhile, but when they grow board, they will fake the child’s death or simply disappear. Occasionally, they will return the human child after they have had their fun. They are immortal.
DEMIGODS Demigods are half human (or fae) and half god. Sometimes it will take them years to learn of their heritage and sometimes they will grow up knowing who their divine parent is. Although they have any mortal limitations, demigods will possess some diluted powers inherited from their divine parent. They have the lifespan of their mortal parent.
