PERSONALITY;;In short; Nikita is a complex character. She is hardly what she seems on the surface, full of contradictions of her own design. Nikita has created an emotional mask to hide behind when dealing with people and society because she wants to left alone not risk forming attachments. While on the surface her attitude can be rather harsh and downright bitchy, her motives behind acting like this are rather noble: to save people from her own bad luck. Nikita is deliberately antisocial and drives people away from opportunities to befriend her because she does not wish to form attachments to them, simply because as a Banshee she does not wish to have to keen for them.
Nikita is also as stubborn as an ox. She is not one to take orders and does things on her own terms, so there is no point trying to order her about. Though, if you ask her to do something politely, Nikita may oblige. Nikita hates rudeness and being ordered about; she much rather prefers to do things out of her own free will.
However, despite her outwardly brusque attitude, Nikita does have some softness to her, which comes to the surface when she is around her foster brother, Jon. She cares for him a great deal, and her cause in life is to make sure that he remains safe. And this 'ice queen' has also been seen to help small children when they are being bullied. She can seem intimidating to them at first, but they seem to be able to find an element of kindness in her that adults are unable to reach. No matter how harsh she can be, Nikita will never be mean to a child.
FLAWS;;NIGHT-TERRORS – Every night Nikita has terrible nightmares that plague her mind and returns her to the day when she and her foster brother had found their parents dead, reliving the event over and over. Some nights the night terrors take a different turn and her imagination makes her a witness to their deaths, trying to but unable to save them from the past. Nikita wakes up from these nightmares in cold sweat panic, sobbing. Sometimes Nikita can calm herself down on her own and return to sleep, but on the worst nights the only way to be freed from her panic is her for brother to actually shake her and make her focus on him - forcing her to calm down.
ABSENT-MINDED – Nikita often gets lost in her own head, just daydreaming until the point that she is oblivious to everything going on around her. In happens mostly when she is sitting in the very top of a tree, so it could definitely be said that she had her “head in the clouds”.
ALCOHOLIC – What happens to a Banshee when they couldn't save those they loved most, let alone able to predict such deaths? You guessed it. Nikita buries her sorrows in the nearest barrel of mead or hard liquor that she can find, and she will not resurface until the world is a blur as she is too plastered to walk in a straight line. Her brother has found her passed out in the town tavern with a drink in hand, snoring her head off, more than once.
HUMOURLESS – Nikita doesn't laugh. Forget about it. Well, she does HAVE the ability to see humor in life, she just chooses to ignore it. Completely ignores it. Nikita used to laugh, but the most you would get out of her now is a raised eyebrow. Not even a smile. Even your best joke will fall flat on it's face with this girl.
OBSESSIVE – While on one hand Nikita's determination to keep her brother could be seen as admirable, on the other it could be seen as completely obsessive. I mean, Nikita follows him around as his own personal bodyguard... and nothing he can say to her will stop it. She just doesn't listen to him one ounce.
SECRETS;;
PLAYS THE LYRE – for a hardened warrior and bodyguard, music is something that is considered frivolous and unnecessary. However, when Nikita is alone (typically while her brother is far too busy with his patients), she produces a lyre from the bottom of his saddlebags and will sit in the top of the tree to play. Nikita is a rather accomplished player, having been self taught, but not even her brother knows about it. Considering that it is something frivolous and un-warrior like.
CAN'T READ - Nikita never attended Ioralta Academy like others of her species would, but she did get enough schooling to be able to recognize the letters individually, but Nikita is unable to read full words or sentences. The only person that knows she can't read is her foster brother. It sometimes frustrates her... but there's not really anything she is required to read... so she brushes it off with "my brother is the smart one".
SQUAWKS - If someone ever calls her a "bird brain" Nikita can't help but let out a squawk of indignation while the feathers on her wings ruffle to display her displeasure at the insult. For Nikita, being called a "bird brain" is the equivalent of being called an idiot.
FAMILY;;
Birth (banshee) parents - Marcus and Freyja Nyx - whereabouts unknown
Foster (human) parents – Stewart and Brunhilda Lancashire - deceased
Foster (human) brother – Jon Lancashire - (24 years old)
Biological (banshee) sister - Ailith Nyx - (18 years old) whereabouts unknown
HISTORY;;Nikita had once been a sweet child, polite and quiet... and playful. She even smiled. Her birth parents had met in the usual way, stolen glances through a crowd of people, her mother blushing at her fathers charming smile. Before long he would be sneaking her away for stolen kisses under the moon light and dancing in the forest where no one could see them. Within a year they would be wed and off to start their new life. And like all wedding nights, the first born child was often conceived that very night – in Nikita's case, under the light of a full moon in the forest where no one could see her lovesick parents tangled together.
Like any new infant, her parents dotted upon their child with all in the care of the world... until she started walking. The day she started walking it wouldn't be unusual to find her parents upturning chairs and tables in search of the small girl... which was how she went missing. Nikita was found by a human couple, who had just had an infant of their own... younger than the little girl they found. And the feathered wings were somewhat of a surprise. The humans took her in, thinking that the girl's parents may yet visit, asking about a little girl with white wings and if they had seen her.
Nikita's parents never came calling. The human couple adopted the child as their foster daughter, raising her as their own, baring witness as Nikita's crop of baby black hair fell out in time to be replaced by hair that was as papery white as the moon itself. The humans took it all in their stride and looked after the baby girl as if she really were their own daughter; raised her alongside their own son, Jon. Nikita formed an attachment to her new family, especially her foster brother, Jon. One could only imagine what her birth parents were thinking when their daughter had failed to return home.
Life was happy.
Nikita grew into a teenager alongside Jon, whom she openly called her brother, and got into all sorts of trouble alongside him. Constantly getting scolded by their parents while the siblings giggled at what they had classed as “playing around”. The pair acted more like mischievous twins than foster siblings, but Jon liked having a sister that could fly. Even when the other children in the village asked why Nikita had wings, Jon would proudly state that it was because she was clearly special! The other kids had never seen a Banshee before, so they agreed readily. Even Nikita learned more about being a Human than being a Banshee.
Nikita was a normal teenager until she had gone out with Jon one day. It was one of their regular outings: Jon racing across the fields on his horse while Nikita raced through the sky above him, both laughing at their game. But when they returned to find their parents and regale them with a story about finding an eagle's nest, their young worlds shattered in an instant. They had walked through the door to find their parents slaughtered!
Jon had rushed to them to see if they were, by any chance, alive.... while something within his sister's mind snapped: her vision flickered in flashes at the sight of the blood that splattered the walls. In her panic, Nikita fled the room, flying away to land in a tree to shed her tears in privacy. She did not return until she her eyes were red and sore. When Nikita did return it was to collapse at Jon's feet. “Forgive me brother.... I failed.... I failed....” she wept in shame, knowing all too well that as a Banshee she was meant to be able to predict 'death', followed by bone chilling keening. Only, Nikita had never predicted the deaths of their parents. In her mind, she had failed.
Jon sat beside her and held her close, telling her that he had learned that bandits had attacked the village, killing not only their parents, but two other couples in the process... people who had attempted to defend themselves.
“You are not to blame for this Nikita. No one could have predicted this”, he promised her, fighting back his own tears that he would shed after she had fallen asleep that night, having exhausted herself.
It was a defining moment in the lives of the foster siblings. Jon decided the next morning that he would become a healer, specializing in the worst cases, saving lives from the very brink of death. Nikita decided to become a warrior. While Nikita became valuable to Jon in being able to sense death naturally, leading him to dying people that he would be able to save; Nikita promised herself that she would never had to keen the death of her brother, if she could help it. The Banshee became not only Jon's guide, but his bodyguard.
Nikita trained herself in all manner of weapons: bows and arrows, daggers, swords, spears... anything that she could get her hands on. Nikita took to the weapons with a seriousness that had never been present in her before. She changed. Gone was the happy girl that had gotten into trouble and laughed beside her brother... replaced by a serious young woman. Nikita rarely smiled, and only ever around her brother, but she no longer laughed, or desired to have “fun”. Nikita even developed a humorless sense of sarcasm which she readily used when people began getting on her nerves, or she viewed them as being 'stupid'.
Nikita still keened for the patients that she couldn't lead her brother too fast enough, but she is tormenting her own mind with a question of why she hadn't sensed the deaths of the villagers and her foster parents. She had sensed death and keened before that day... but that defining day had been blank. Every night Nikita asks herself, and her brother, why she failed that day.... and every night the question goes unanswered. Neither of them have any clue.
