It was a warm, happy day. The day itself might not have been happy, days were rarely happy but Adriana was. It was her last day in Sgaithte. Her father had finally agreed to let her study at Ioralta and she was finally going to have the freedom to travel somewhere besides her home. The one place she had spent all nineteen years of her life in. Her father had rarely let her outside the castle even inside their own country, and especially nowhere outside of it. He had spoken about giants, murderers, rapists and demons. He had told her story after story to frighten her of the world, but Adriana had let it go in one ear and out the other. She knew his true reasons for keeping her hidden away. She knew he didn't want her to taste freedom because then she would be tempted to run. The possibility was something she toyed with occasionally. Wondering what it would be like to go out on her own and being free from someone telling you what to do and when you should do it. She couldn't imagine being on her own, she couldn't imagine fighting for food or shelter. Not having someone pour you a bath at the end of a long day, as spoiled as she knew she sounded it was the truth.
She had packed most of her belongings the night before. Her father had spoken to the people at Ioralta and they had agreed to let her in because of her status. Adriana despised people who used their bloodlines to get what they wanted, but she had to admit that in this case she was beyond thankful. She was so excited that she could barely sleep, she spent the whole night packing and wondering what courses she would be taking. Her father was clear about wanting her to take nothing that had to do with fighting and sticking to more " lady-like" courses like the arts. She had nodded her head, but knew that once she got there the decision would be hers. For the first time she could decide what she was going to study and she could do it freely. She wondered about the students there and it made her nervous. She had never been around many girls her age, or boys for that matter. She wouldn't even know how to begin, well hello there...I'm a princess...you've probably never heard of me, my father kept me mostly locked up. Yea..that doesn't sound deranged at all she mused to herself. Perhaps she could go through the courses without making friends, it wouldn't be fun, but she wasn't there for fun.
Adriana had woken up this morning and decided to take one last stroll before she told her kingdom goodbye. She had rarely been able to explore the countryside, but she had been to the market once and the lake twice with her maids when she was younger. She had decided that the lake was where she would head first. She glanced at her father's map in the study and after noting that it wasn't too horribly far from the castle she waited until her father was absorbed in a meeting and then left. He had assumed she would be packing which left her a whole day to explore. She found the small path and began trailing her way to the lake. Their countryside was not what most would call "beautiful". It was almost always hot and there wasn't much more than dragons and sharp rocks, but it was her home and she loved it. The dragons could be heard at night bellowing to each other which she supposed scared others, but to her it was soothing, even the wild ones.
After what seemed like hours she finally came to the clearing and the lake. It was every bit as beautiful as she remembered it. She quietly looked around and after she was sure there was no one else there she stepped out of the woods and walked to where the lake met the earth. She sat down and put her feet in the cool water. It was another hot day, but she couldn't help the smile that was on her face. She was one step closer to a true life.

Peregrine was in a lousy mood. Khalidah was off creating sexual tension with the strange man who had just invited himself to take a seat at their table. He had decided to call the man Beardy, regardless of what he said his real name was. He did not like the man and he did not like his confident manner with which he introduced himself to people, never mind that Peregrine himself was confident.
He had mounted his mare, Tremor and rode off to give Khalidah and her whoring ways some space. Maybe he could find some lady of the night and return with her on his arm, proving to his companion that he was just as capable as her at getting some attention.
His attention temporarily diverted from his anger, he took the time to examine his surroundings. He had previously seen Sgaithte as a vast rocky wasteland where one hunted rabbits and avoided dragons. Now that he was not being pursued by men intent on killing and/or re-imprisoning him and exploded volcano's, the prince had to admit that Sagaithte did have its charms about it. It's rocky cliffs did allow for some trees and shrubs to grow in them and he felt something on his face: a cool breeze. Lowering his hood, he allowed it to caress his skin. Habitually, he went to shake his curls off and then remembered that he had had them cut short earlier that morning. It was a short while later when he came to a beautiful, spacious lake.
Panning around to make sure he was alone, Peregrine dismounted and knelt at the lake's edge and cupped his hands to take a drink. It was then that he saw movement out of the corner of his eye, and he jumped back, spilling the water over his front in surprise as he saw the blonde girl.
His first instinct was to bow and proclaim himself, but a new, more primal instinct was taking over; the instinct to throw his hood on and explain that he had nothing to do with federally-wanted princes or escaped, wrongfully-accused convicts, but he took a deep breath and pleaded with himself to play it cool.
"Good morning, m'lady." He said, bowing politely.

Adriana had been thinking about the last book she had read. It was about a girl who was a fierce heroine. She could battle monsters and fight beside her love. She was brave, strong and beautiful. Adriana had fantasized about being such a brave heroine, the townspeople in the book not only looked up to the girl, but they had followed her into battle and trusted her. She would never lead her country, but it was nice to pretend. It was fun to imagine herself as a brave, beautiful warrior. She was holding onto these feeling of bravery when a man showed up on horseback. Adriana made sure to stay absolutely still, barely allowing herself to breathe. The man had drawn up near her and when he dismounted she felt all the bravery she had earlier vanish. His eyes never seemed to glance over at her and she was fairly certain that he had not seen her, but she was too fearful to try and escape before he did notice her. She watched quietly as the man went to take a drink of the cool water and then suddenly spill it all down his shirt. He had seemed surprised to see her and this act pushed the fear from Adriana and replace it with the urge to laugh. She tried to hide her grin at his surprise. He had then bowed to her and spoke, "Good morning, m'lady".
She let herself look over him more closely. He was handsome, she had to give him that. He was taller than her, and his eyes were a beautiful turquoise shade. He didn't seem to mean her any harm or threat so she allowed herself to relax a bit. She stood up and brushed off her hands, bowing her head slightly to to him. She wished her charms and manners teacher madame pentaloase could see her now, she would have been impressed. Then again she probably would have been chastised for being out here alone and with a member of the opposite sex, how scandalous.
" Good morning sir. How are you on this beautiful day? "
She looked at his water soaked chest and smiled a bit
" A bit more cooler than when you first arrived I imagine? Sorry to have startled you...."
She wondered briefly if she should lie about her name. She didn't know anything about this man, and he could very well be someone who would take advantage of her lineage and kidnap her for a ransom or worse. There was no telling why he was here or who he was. Then again, she had rarely been seen outside the palace gates and others probably wouldn't even know her even if she did tell them her name. She wondered what reason her father gave others if they asked where his daughter was. She wondered what lies he told...a sickness or that she was so ugly she had to be hidden. There was no telling. She decided there would be no harm in a first name, if he asked of course. He was under no obligation to introduce himself, perhaps this exchange would be just a short passing and she could get back to her day of exploring before her father found her out and threatened to take away her trip.

"That's quite all right." Peregrine responded, mopping up the water that had dribbled down his front with his sleeve. If someone else, say, something less pretty had caused him to spill water on himself like an untrained child, he would have gotten bothered and miffed about it, as it was, it was already not dignified, for a grown man, let alone a prince, spill liquids on himself, but since it was caused by a pretty blonde girl, he wasn't going to fuss about it.
After dusting himself off, Peregrine went about making conversation with her, for that's what one does, when left alone with an unidentified pretty blonde: one makes polite conversation with her.
"Jack the Shadow at your service." He said, using the same alias he had used on Khalidah. He still thought it rather fitting that he introduce himself to Jack to everyone. He looked like a commoner now, a well-dressed commoner in these clothes, but a commoner nonetheless. "And am I to take it that your name is as pretty as your face?"
It felt good to do some harmless flirting again, now that he wasn't running for his life or forced into the same space as...Khalidah, who was as unavailable and undesirable as the rats they craved back in Riasglach. It was nice to be reminded that there were attractive females in the world. Peregrine had forgotten, after being locked up in that hell-hole for so long, that he was a ladies' man at heart.

"Jack the Shadow at your service." The first thing that struck Adriana was that he gave her a very odd name, certainly not one that someone of ranking or nobility would have. Most of the men she met pronounced their names haughtily as if their whole lineage could be shamed if they left out a middle name. One of her father's businessmen had pronounced his full name with such gusto she wondered if he was famous in his own country, a celebrity of sorts. She couldn't help but affiliate names like the one the man in front of her gave with criminals or other bad men. Good men were rarely called " Edgar the darkness" or " Benjamin the swift" it just didn't happen.
When he spoke about her pretty face Adriana felt the blood rush to her cheeks. She tried desperately to hide her blush but knew it was apparent. It was just so uncommon. Most of the men she came in contact with were either exceedingly old friends of her fathers, cold and ruthless guards, or marriage "interests" who disgusted her. It was very rare to be around a young man, especially a handsome one at that and to have him there and remarking on her beauty was bound to bring a blush or two on her fair cheeks.
" Nice to meet you Jack, my name is Adriana"
Adriana glanced over at the horse the man had rode up on and smiled a little. Though she did not have a dragon of her own she adored them and comparatively horses just seemed so boring and slow, she still enjoyed being around them and their quiet, intuitive nature. The horse seemed content and she wondered where they had came from and where they were going. Their country wasn't known to have scenic views so they certainly weren't here for a joy ride.
" So what brings you to our...the...countryside?"
She could almost kick herself with how easily she slipped up. She tried to keep a relaxed face, betraying no hints over messing up what she was saying. It could seem innocent, just someone who loved their country and thought of it as their own...not a princess who the country actually belonged to. She had dressed modestly, though it was probably still not enough to fool someone over who she was and what her background was. She took a deep breath, she was trying and she had to give herself credit. To be alone and out for the first time she thought she was doing quite well.

"So your name is as pretty as your face." He flashed her his best prince charming smile. He had forgotten how much fun this was, and how good at it he was. Back home, he would flirt with anything that was female and walked on two legs, merely for the fun of it. He was rarely ever serious enough to take one out on a moonlit ride by the lake and deal with the trailing chaperon of an old nurse, who he would soon leave in the dust. Somehow, he always avoided getting into serious trouble when things got a little 'inappropriate' with the prettiest of women. He had never been in love and he loathed the idea of getting married, of being tied down, but he could handle the sweet flings and heart-bubbling feelings of romanced.
A thousand stories swam before him as he narrowed in on one. It was thrilling and it perpetuated the myth he was creating to cover up the much more exciting truth. Still smiling charmingly, he giggled.
"Why, haven't you heard of me? I'm Jack the Shadow, greatest thief in all of Speirling. I'm obviously here to steal right under your noses."
He knew he was charming enough to get away with what were normally alarming statements, and besides, girls liked the bad boy, the exotic, mysterious charmer and for many reasons, that was the safest role for him to play right now. He smiled again. "Give me something to steal and I guarantee, I will get it for you, and as a bonus, I will arrive in one piece after my thrilling expedition."

How easy it was to be young and to fall in love. She could almost feel it. She could feel herself wanting to know more about the stranger in front of her. She could feel her heart speed up when he smiled. She could feel her cheeks get hot at the thought of his lips to hers, It was a cruel trick that fate played. She couldn't allow herself to follow that path that so easily called out to her. She wouldn't, couldn't get lost in the game of falling in love. She knew the end. No matter what she wanted this man in front of her would not be her ending. It would probably be some middle-aged war lord with ties to a nearby kingdom, someone she had nothing in common with or who cared about her at all. Her cards were dealt and this man was not it. She resolved that it was probably for the best that she not allow herself to get carried away. She watched the way he smiled and talked, he was used to flirting. He was probably use to girls beating down his door to have a date with him. She would not be another list of names on his conquests.
"Why, haven't you heard of me? I'm Jack the Shadow, greatest thief in all of Speirling. I'm obviously here to steal right under your noses."
She looked over at him amusingly. So she was right, he was a thief. She wouldn't have heard of him of course, her father rarely spoke to her about the happenings of their kingdom and especially not the mentions of thieves. She wondered why he was telling her all this though, it didn't seem very smart on his part.
" Well then you must think of me very insignificant to be telling me your identity, either that or you're very dull-witted. For all you know I could be a lawman's daughter, I could turn you right in...then where would you be?"
"Give me something to steal and I guarantee, I will get it for you, and as a bonus, I will arrive in one piece after my thrilling expedition"
She debated on what to tell him to steal, but it was silly really, this game they were playing. She could request her father, the King's sword and he would vow to do it then leave her in the dust...never to see her again. She watched him, and wondered why he was going to such lengths to convince her he was a thief. She wasn't exactly doubting that he was, she had no doubts that this man was capable, but perhaps he was not as good as he was implying and wished to boast himself up to impress her, either way she wasn't going to give him the time of day to do it.

He smiled, showing her all of his dazzling teeth, which, even after a year of poverty still showed signed of being cared for most of his life.
"You could...but he'd have to catch me first."
He was feeling confident now: more confident than usual. He had just escaped from the impregnable prison and gotten away with it. More than that, he had escaped with his health, sanity, good looks and all of his limbs, and a friend...a friend who was currently whoring herself to Beardy with the stupid beard of stupid. He wasn't bothered by Beardy's existence right now, for he had Adriana to occupy his affections with.
He took a step nearer to her, partly because he wanted to prove his point and partly because she was cute and who wouldn't want to get nearer to her.
"I'll steal anything you request and get away scott-free. I guarantee it."
He smiled again and ghosted his fingers along her rosy cheek, barely touching her, teasing.
"I'll even steal your heart."
He let her think about that for a minute, letting his words hang in the air, allowing her time to conjure up images of the romance they could have together, and permitting himself to conjure up some images of his own. Lying in fields full of flowers, watching the moonrise, kissing under starlight...
And then he was grinning at her again, letting her know that it was half a joke, and half-serious.

"You could...but he'd have to catch me first."
She couldn't help but grin a little at his confidence. She had figured her comment would have caught him off guard at the very least, but it hadn't. She had to give him credit for his endurance. Most of the older men who she met would roll their eyes and comment to her father that he needed to keep his daughter in check when a man was speaking. They didn't like women to say anything more than my how handsome you are and bed me please. It was infuriating. This man though, Jack didn't seem fazed by it.
She continued to look at him as if she was bored, but when he took a step near her she felt her breathing hitch. She was naive and innocent when it came to the world of romance. She would be the first to admit it. She hadn't been exposed to men. The only thing she had a clue about was from books and they were no help in real life. They spoke of a character feeling excited and happy, they mentioned nothing of his deep, manly smell that pulled her in closer to him. They gave her no warning about how perfect his lips would be and how much she would want to feel them pressed to her own.
When he ran his finger down her cheek she closed her eyes and fought back the urge to close the gap between them. She could do it, she knew she could let her morals down for one brief moment. Have this one passionate moment with this stranger and never see him again. Let this one moment with him be the start to her new life. Perhaps when she was married off to a man she didn't even want to look at she could think back to this man and this day. When she opened her eyes though she noticed the grin and her look turned deadly.
She quickly chastised herself for falling for his charms, she reminded herself again that this man had probably bedded a hundred women and she would just be another number on his list. She didn't want that and she wouldn't let him lead her to it either. She turned abruptly and began walking off towards the castle.
" I highly doubt that sir "
She looked back towards the woods uncertain of which path to take and feeling like a naive little schoolgirl.

It did wonders for his already inflated ego, watching her be so affected by him, but now that it had been established that it was attracted to her, he was interested in getting to see and know more about her, spending more time with her and if she bored him (and so far, she was doing anything but) he could piss off Kahlidah. It was win-win and what could possibly go wrong?
He bounced away from her, grinning when she brought things back to formal grounds.
"Care to take a bet, m'lady?" He challenged, mischeviously winking at her. "What will you wager, if your faith against me is so strong? I said I was the greatest thief in Speirling, not the greatest lover." He winked and glided back to his Tremor, who was contentedly munching grass.
He felt like a weight had been lifted from his shoulders. This flirting game with Adriana made him feel like himself again. Carefree and sexy, confident and full of zeal, like a prince should be. He had a taste for adventure with this new lady and his eyes sparkled as an idea came to him.
"You ever ridden a horse before?" He asked, then chuckled at his own joke. "Okay, stupid question, have you ever ridden a fast horse before?"

"Care to take a bet, m'lady?"
When he continued their conversation she was taken back. She wondered if this guy would ever give up. She wondered if he was even use to girls telling him no. She didn't think so. All the girls in her books fell for the rugged bad boy, he seemed to fit the bill. She wasn't going to let it happen though. He could smile his charming smile all day long and she wouldn't give in. It just wasn't worth it, the end never changed. It was like an old book, no matter how horrible and gruesome the end might be it was still the way it ended. Nothing could change what was written.
"What will you wager, if your faith against me is so strong? I said I was the greatest thief in Speirling, not the greatest lover."
" You must truly have no idea what you're doing if you plan to "steal my heart" and lead off with the fact that you are a thief and not a lover. Wouldn't you want to proclaim the opposite? If a wager is what you want however I will oblige. How does 3,000 gold sound? If you are truly confident in your abilities..."
She wanted to laugh. The poor boy had no idea what he was up against. She was not some common girl who was taking boys hearts and choosing mates. She was had no choice in the matter over who she loved so she had closed that door off a long time ago. It would take a lot more than a few charming glances for that door to come down. When he asked if she had ridden a fast horse before she laughed a little.
" You're in Sgaithte remember. We prefer to use slightly...larger and toothier forms of transportation. No offense, but your horse isn't what I would call fast. Though it is very pretty, what's its name?"
She walked over to the animal and touched her palm to it's soft nose. She had never had a horse of her own, though her father kept quite a few in the stables. She could never see the appeal in them. They were slower than dragons and a lot less expressive. She could see their use wondering about town, but she hadn't done any of that so her need of them was very little.

Peregrine merely smiled. The price to pay should he fail (and he wouldn't) was mere pocket change to him. He only had a few silver and gold pieces to rub together right now, but he was confident in his abilities to pull 3,000 gold out of the air without too much trouble.
"Excellent." The prince said, "Let us shake on it." He held out his hand to her, deciding to forego the spitting into his hand, mostly because he felt that touching other people's saliva was barbaric and he would much rather come into contact with her saliva with a different part of his body.
He clutched at his chest and mimed dramatically being pushed back by an invisible force, his face hamming up a pained expression.
"You wound me, madam!" He objected, stroking Tremor's neck as consolation. "Offense has been taken." He pretended to pout, sticking his lower lip out for a minute, but his eyes still danced with happiness at doing something so carefree and innocent.
"This is Tremor and she's a she." He said, taking her reins and leading her over to Adriana. "Tell you what, I'll take you for a little spin on my mare and you can see for yourself that she's not exactly what you'd call a snail." He smiled, charmingly again and reached for her hand.
"May I help you up?"

The man agreed quickly to her bet and shook her hand. He has acted as if 3,000 gold was nothing so she assumed that either he was a very good thief like he had told her or there was more to the story than what he was letting on. She wasn't worried over the amount though, it was a fool's thought to indulge in the game of him winning her heart. It simply would not happen so she was certain that the money would be in her account in no time. However if the world was somehow turned on it's side and she did fall in love with him 3,000 was nothing. She had more than that in her wardrobe funds. There were perks to being a princess who wasn't allowed to party and socialize: your money was never spent and just built up more and more. She had quite an extensive amount with no reason or need to spend it. It was a horrible ironic circle.
When Jack made a mockery of being offended she smiled. It was the truth, no matter how fast his horse was she just couldn't compete with a dragon.
"This is Tremor and she's a she."
Adriana spoke to the horse and did a small curtsey as if meeting someone new. " Hello Tremor, I'm Adriana and I did not mean to cause offense, but I don't think your human knows what he is talking about." She looked over at Jack and stroked the horse's hair while she spoke " have you ever even ridden a dragon before?". "May I help you up?" She looked up at him and his outstretched hand. Was he serious? Did he really expect her to just jump on the back of a horse riding with a stranger she just met? Adriana looked away for a moment. She could see the castle from here. She could imagine her father looking over all of his maps and charts over where their soldiers were, looking over the needs of his country. If she left the man now she could make it home in time before he figured out she was gone. She could finish packing while he did whatever else he needed to do. She would then sit on her bed and wait for the following day, wait for her adventure to start. She glanced again at Jack's hand...she could wait...or she could have one now.
What harm could it really do? If he wanted to harm her he could have done it already. She was certain he didn't mean her harm. She took his hand " Well...Jack...prove me wrong"

Tremor merely sniffed her hand and went on with existing. The horse had changed hands so many times that she had no opinion on new people. She did rather like Peregrine, though, for he was an excellent horseman and unless their impending doom was upon them, he was gentle with her mouth and didn't wear spurs. He didn't need them, for Tremor was more than fast enough.
"Oh, I most certainly do." Peregrine snarked right back. "I did once." He lied, casually. "It was boring."
Without warning, he picked her up bride-style and smiled into her pretty face, but he caught his breath as his eyes met hers. She was not only pretty, but there was a person behind those eyes, a beautiful person, a person who was already breathing life into him as a prince. He let out a tiny gasp, as he realized that she had stolen his breath from him. Her skin was soft and warm, like it had not been exposed to rough weather or subjected to hard work. Soft and pale, it sent a lovely jolt of electricity through him and he felt something within his stomach swoop pleasantly.
"Has anyone ever told you, you look like a storybook princess?"
He was being sincere this time, not just charming for the sake of charming. He decided to lift her onto Tremor's back, for he knew that if kept on holding her like that, he would kiss her and if he kissed her, he didn't think he'd be able to stop. He set her down gently before swinging gracefully up in front of her and gathering up the reins.
"Hold onto me." He advised, being nothing less but thrilled that she had a legitimate reason to snuggle close to him. He liked the feeling of her body against his and he knew that he could get used to this.
And the wicked grin was back as he nudged Tremor's sides and she shot off like an arrow. Dragons might have been fast, but so was Tremor and she was a lot more up-close-and-personal with the treacherous ground that she galloped over, as nimbly as a squirrel.

"It was boring."
That was a word she would never in a million years associate with dragons. They were dragons for heavens sake! What person in their right mind would think a fire-breathing, scaly, ferocious, toothy dragon could ever be boring? Her first dragon ride was when she was eleven and she had been fearless. It was the only time in her life that she could distinctly remember her father showing how proud he was of her. She had climbed bravely onto the creature's back, which was an older one and with an instructor of course, and she had done the lesson with excitement. She had learned quickly and soon found she had a natural talent for the giant beings. She had asked her father for one, but of course things had gotten in the way. He was always too busy to go to the market and she was never allowed to go out anyways so it was soon forgotten. Occasionally she would visit the older castle dragons but as her charm and manners classes became more and more she found her free time becoming less and less.
" Now I know you must being lying to me...there's no possible way you can ride a dragon and think it was boring."
Jack had picked her up suddenly and she soon found herself staring into his eyes. Those deep turquoise eyes that held secrets and beckoned her to come closer to him. She found herself lost for a moment, unable to see anything other than those deep pools of blue. She was all too aware of his muscular arms around her, she could instantly feel her blood betray her and give her a deep blush. She had never been held like this by a man and she was afraid to admit to herself how much she liked it. She enjoyed the way his muscles, tanned and strong felt against her own soft body. The way she felt protected and secure without even knowing she had been longing for it.
"Has anyone ever told you, you look like a storybook princess?"
She snapped her attention away from her thoughts and focused on his words. No, of course no one had ever told her that. She hadn't been around many people who would speak to her freely like they were doing.
" Uhm, no...I can't say that they have, at least not a storybook one. Is that a good thing? "
There were lots of princesses in lots of stories. Some were whiny, some were stupid and then there were the brave beautiful ones. She wondered which ones he was talking about. When he joined her on Tremor she didn't put her hands around him, even after he suggested she did. She wasn't going to just throw her arms around him. She figured she could handle a horse without needing assistance. However when the horse took off she found herself clutching him in an embrace. She held onto him as the horse picked up speeds that surpassed any of her fathers champions. The dragons were quicker, but they were in the air. This was through trees, over streams, and going in speeds she had never been before, at least not this close to the ground. The wind began to sting her eyes and she laid her head down on his back. His intoxicating smell seemed to wrap around her and she couldn't help but think back to when he held her. She tried to speak over the wind.
" Ok, you win this one...she's fast, but where are we going?"
